What is VAWA?
The Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) is a landmark piece of legislation that was enacted by the Clinton Administration in 1994. It has undergone reauthorization three times, twice by the Bush Administration in 2000 and 2005, and once by the Obama Administration in 2013, so that victims of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking no longer have to suffer abuse in silence.
The Office on Violence Against Women (OVW) is a component of the United States Department of Justice (DOJ). The OVW implements the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) of 1994 and subsequent legislation and provides national leadership on issues of sexual assault, domestic violence, dating violence, and stalking. In 2013, VAWA protection was extended to Native Americans and members of the LGBTQ community. OVW implements grant programs authorized by VAWA through state, local and tribal partnerships among the police, prosecutors, judges, victim advocates, health care providers, faith leaders and others. OVW grants help provide victims with the protection and services they need to pursue safe and healthy lives, while improving communities’ capacity to hold offenders accountable for their crimes.
OVW has provided NMRLS with a grant to further its mission of reducing violence against women and administering justice for, and strengthening services to victims of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking.
