NORTH MISSISSIPPI RURAL LEGAL SERVICES, INC. (NMRLS) is seeking an
Heirs' Property Staff Attorney
for its Oxford branch office.
Responsibilities
The Heirs’ Property Staff Attorney is responsible for the provision of a full range of comprehensive legal assistance to eligible clients as a practicing attorney, licensed in Mississippi, in accordance with Legal Services Corporation rules and regulations, NMRLS program guidelines, priorities, case handler standards, and the Mississippi Rules of Professional Conduct.
DUTIES: Responsible for all phases of the following:
A. Client Advocacy
- Maintain an active caseload consistent with the duties of NMRLS staff attorneys;
- Keep apprised of changes in the law and other issues that may affect the NMRLSclient population and advise the Supervising Attorney;
- Research land records in order to determine heirs of land tracts;
- Provide counsel and advice to client population by identifying key issues and proposing best course of action after analysis of facts and relevant law;
- Conduct client intakes as needed;
- Draft estate documents, deeds, heirship affidavits, etc. as needed; and
- Prepare initial pleadings, answers to complaints, briefs, etc. in representing clients in court to achieve the desired outcome for clients; and
- Perform other duties as deemed necessary.
B. Administrative
- Conduct or participate in outreach activities, training, public speaking forums, State Bar legal education forums, and other public functions on a regular basis;
- Comply with office policies and procedures;
- Represent the program at meetings and other external functions as may be required; and
- Assist Elder Law Project Director in monitoring progress of grant terms, generating annual final report, and applying for yearly grant.
Qualifications
Must hold a JD degree and be licensed in the State of Mississippi at the time of hiring. Demonstrate sensitivity to the legal problems of low-income persons. Possess strong writing, verbal, analytical and interpersonal skills as well as good judgment. Possess other experience, qualifications and skills as are deemed appropriate.
