Mississippi Tax Payer Assistance Project

The Mississippi Taxpayer Assistance Project (MTAP) is a project of North Mississippi Rural Legal Services (NMRLS), and provides assistance to low income and English as a Second Language (ESL) taxpayers throughout Mississippi. It provides low income taxpayers with free legal assistance on federal and some state tax matters.

We are a Low Income Taxpayer Clinic (LITC). There is at least one LITC in every state in the country. The MTAP is the only LITC in Mississippi offering free legal representation to low income Mississippians.

Low Income Taxpayer Clinics ensure the fairness and integrity of the tax system by educating low income taxpayers about their rights and responsibilities, by providing pro bono representation to taxpayers in tax disputes with the IRS, by conducting outreach and education to taxpayers who speak English as a second language, and by identifying and advocating for issues that impact low income taxpayers.

We provide representation to taxpayers who cannot afford to pay for legal or tax assistance. We travel across the state of Mississippi to conduct informational seminars with and for the taxpayers of Mississippi. Although funded by the IRS, we are completely independent from the IRS and the Mississippi Department of Revenue.

The tax laws can be confusing and hard to understand. If you are having problems with the IRS, the Mississippi Taxpayer Assistance Project provides taxpayers with free legal assistance on tax issues throughout the entire year.
